What you should know about using plasterboard for home renovations

Plasterboard is a type of drywall where there is heavy paper on the inside and outside of the board, with plaster on the inside. It provides a variety of benefits, from stability to natural insulation properties. Here are some things to know about plasterboard to decide if it is a good option for your home.

Plasterboard Is Excellent For Insulation

If you need better insulation in your home, particularly for cutting out noise and reducing distractions, you should use plasterboard. Due to the multiple layers of plaster and paper, it can really cut down the outside noises. There are also high-performance versions of plasterboard that is meant for soundproofing in your home. These are great for walls in your baby's nursery where you want her to sleep soundly, for a music room in your home, or in a theatre room. You might also want it when renovating a home office since it can keep the distractions to a minimum when you need to work from home.

Don't Use It in Rooms with a Lot of Moisture

While plasterboard is durable in general, it isn't the best type of drywall when you have a room that is subject to a lot of moisture and water. For example, if there is a room of your home with a lot of humidity, like a basement or a bathroom, it is best to use a different type of drywall. This does contain insulation, but mostly for noise, and not so much for moisture and avoiding mould. You could be dealing with mildew fairly quickly if there is too much moisture in the air or if a water leak reaches the drywall.

It Is Simple to Use

Also consider the fact that plasterboard is very easy for you to use, even if you are completing renovations for a DIY project. The plasterboard is not too thick or heavy to where you can barely lift it, and it can be found at most home supply stores. It is not difficult to cut to the right size and tends to go up more easily and quickly than other types of drywall. With some simple tools and supplies, you will be on your way to brand new walls.

You Can Paint over the Plasterboard Easily

You will most likely want to paint your interior walls, which you can easily do when you have plasterboard. It has a very smooth surface, making primer and paint glide right over it without excessive sanding needing to be done. This is also makes it easy to apply wallpaper without a lot of bumps or bubbles.
